The book

Growing up, remembering and learning to live with it.

Toc y Pop is a light-hearted, anecdote-filled account of living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) amid the whirlwind of everyday life. If you grew up in the 1980s, love music and film, have your own quirks or simply keep secrets, this book is for you.

Through records, memories and landmarks of popular culture —from the magazines Súper Pop and Nuevo Vale to hits by Madonna or Alaska y Dinarama, and films by Eloy de la Iglesia and Pedro Almodóvar— José Ángel Rico guides us through five decades.

Humour, nostalgia and candour mingle with anxiety, fear and inner demons. This intimate, fresh and honest testimony approaches mental health from a different angle: with sensitivity, but also with a smile.

Talking about what hurts can be the first step towards feeling better.

José Ángel Rico Sierra

He lives in Barcelona, where he contributes to the radio station Ona de Sants and shares his passion for music, film and pop culture. He was born in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, but his heart belongs to Cabeza del Buey, the town in Badajoz where his family comes from and which he also considers home.

His roots are deeply present in the way he tells stories: with tenderness, a sense of humour and disarming honesty. Toc y Pop is his first book.
